Brown Bag: Golden Palms? A Look at Liberia Work Conditions
Hosted by: Institute for Policy Studies
Location: 1112 16th Street NW, Suite 600, Washington, 20036
Time: 12pm – 2pm
Summary: Over the past 5 years, international palm oil companies (including some of the industry's largest producers like Sime Darby and and Golden AgriResources) have bought up hundreds of thousands of hectares in Liberia to create enormous palm oil plantations. The Liberian government has often justified the sale of the concessions by noting that they will create decent jobs for low-skilled laborers, but what is the reality on the ground?

Wednesday, August 20thPreempting Environmental and Human Security Crises in Africa: Science-Based Planning for Climate Variability Threats
Hosted by: The Wilson Center
Location: Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center One Woodrow Wilson Plaza 1300 Pennsylvania Ave. NW Washington, DC 20004-3027
Time: 10am – 1pm
Summary: According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, devastating impacts of climate variability are already being observed in Africa through increased wildfires, shrinking rivers, reduced crop yields, increased water and vector-borne diseases, and other forms. In coming decades, these climatic changes are predicted to impact human and state security via increased resource conflict, radicalization, economic crises, and humanitarian disasters. These threats all have global implications and require urgent rethinking of African and international security strategy. To this end, the Wilson Center's Africa Program and Environmental Change and Security Program, in partnership with the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, will host a dialogue aiming to more effectively link science-based analysis of climate variability with security planning.
