Overview

Economic crises in Brazil and Venezuela, two of the largest economies in the Mercosur trading bloc, have renewed questions about the future of South American integration. This is especially true in light of alternative models such as the Pacific Alliance. With Argentina under new leadership and Brazil in the midst of an impeachment process, Mercosur’s fundamentals are being re-examined as never before. In Argentina and the World: Keys to Successful Integration (La Argentina y el mundo: claves de una integración exitosa) Argentine author and entrepreneur Francisco de Santibañes argues that Argentina can fully develop only through broad insertion into the international system. Santibañes proposes “intelligent” trade liberalization, the improvement of relations with other countries, and the positioning of Buenos Aires as a bridge between Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance. What obstacles need to be overcome for Argentina to play the role envisioned by the author? What, if any, steps is the government of President Mauricio Macri taking in pursuit of other options?

Latin America Program

The Wilson Center’s prestigious Latin America Program provides non-partisan expertise to a broad community of decision makers in the United States and Latin America on critical policy issues facing the Hemisphere. The Program provides insightful and actionable research for policymakers, private sector leaders, journalists, and public intellectuals in the United States and Latin America. To bridge the gap between scholarship and policy action, it fosters new inquiry, sponsors high-level public and private meetings among multiple stakeholders, and explores policy options to improve outcomes for citizens throughout the Americas. Drawing on the Wilson Center’s strength as the nation’s key non-partisan policy forum, the Program serves as a trusted source of analysis and a vital point of contact between the worlds of scholarship and action.  Read more
